Construction Accountant

Reports To: Construction Controller, CFO

Location: Garrett Companies HQ - Greenwood, IN

Reports Required: 

  • Job cost reports

  • Monthly bank draw package

  • Commitment reports

  • COI compliance reports 



A fast-growing development and construction company is seeking a bright, energetic, creative individual with strong work ethic and attention to detail to join our team. The ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks is a necessity. This position is a full-time position that will manage and perform various accounting and bookkeeping tasks and other support assistance as directed. Candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years office, accounting and bookkeeping experience preferably in the construction industry. This is a challenging position that involves a variety of responsibilities and requires strong organizational and management skills.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to maintain accounting functionality/organized system

  • Maintain and Manage Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable per project on a daily basis

  • Collection, Analyze, Organize, and Prepare of monthly draw submission to bank by closely working with our Project Executives and Project Managers on current projects for submission to Architect

  • Data Entry of all Accounts Payable per project assignment

  • Credit application manage for files per project

  • Review accuracy of subcontractor and vendor billings and all appropriate paperwork (lien waivers, certification, etc)

  • Maintained signed Change Orders and Sub signed Change Orders for System and billing

  • Assist in maintaining COI’s from subcontractors

  • Assist with expense recording, job cost tracking and data entry

  • Assist with project work including proofreading, copying and binding presentations/client deliverables

  • Prepare and coordinate presentations and briefing material, of a highly confidential nature, for use at senior level management meetings to ensure accurate and comprehensible presentations

  • Draft, edit and distribute correspondence

  • Assist managers or other staff with their daily functions to ensure department goals are achieved and staff is notified of important information 

  • Perform a variety of complex and specialized administrative and office support functions to ensure the daily operations of the office run efficiently and professionally.

  • Assist other managers with questions and serve as key contact to ensure all requests are responded to in a timely manner pertaining to your projects.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Focus on Construction and Development Industry Standard Cost Codes/Job Costing is a must

  • Sage, Timberline, Procore and Timber Scan software experience REQUIRED

  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as an Accounting Bookkeeper

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher with an Accounting focus

  • Knowledge of accounting within the Industry in Federal, State and Local Municipalities 

  • Accounting experience within our industry preferred

  • Ability to manage time effectively and provide innovation when needed

  • Willingness to understand corporate and industry practices and standards, processes and activities

  • Proficiency in job costing based on construction industry standard cost codes is required

  • Ability to setup AIA formatted pay applications within the accounting system

  • Strong analytical mind who knows how to resolve problems and work well with vendors

  • Attention to detail/accuracy, quick learner and internally motivated to seek out answers, generate ideas, and develop new skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively disseminate information and convey concepts, ideas and information to all levels of employees and external customers

  • Ability to set priorities, organize work and work in high production environment while responding quickly and effectively under pressure, changing priorities and tight timelines/deadlines

  • Team player who can operate effectively within a matrix management environment

  • Microsoft Office, Project and Blue Beam knowledge 

  • Creativity, flexibility and innovation a must

  • Occasionally travel may be required


  • Commercial real estate experience.

  • Must be consistently detail oriented.
